Reduce Bounce Rate with Good Content and Easy Navigation

by Jeff 27. May 2009 15:00

I recently tried a tactic of writing for just search engine traffic that failed and increased my bounce rate so I’ve decided to correct my mistake and write more for people instead of search engines and decrease my bounce rate. Lately I’ve ended up with a really high bounce rate while writing for search engine traffic that I’m not too happy about, yes the traffic went up while I was writing for search engines but so did my bounce rate and I’m sure I made some really unhappy people in the process. Before this realization I was writing for both search engines and people but in separate ways instead of subtly integrating the two tactics into one article I was writing multiple search engine articles and less of the content articles. Using these difference tactics resulted in a high bounce rate and less click though.

Awhile back I wrote a few post on this blog and a few others that targeted some frequently searched terms not thinking the whole thing though I wrote and posted some content without thinking about what my goals where. Not having a good goal is great if you want your bounce rate to go up. Yes my search engine traffic doubled but so did my bounce rate with it. Having a high bounce rate made me stop and think about what my goals where. Yes I want more traffic but at what costs, writing for search engines alone is a waste of time, all it did was increase my traffic and annoy some interested readers. All the pages I wrote for specific search terms where junk if someone was to read them. I did provide good content on other posts but they were never seen because of the poorly worded content on the search engine targeted posts that forced my readers to move on. If the visitor coming from a specific search term doesn’t like the content there reading, the visitor will leave right away I found this out first hand and have now made a decision to change that by structuring my blog how I would a normal website, write content for people not search terms, adding graphics and content that would keep visitors interested not just search terms that attract search engine traffic.

My first task in decreasing my bounce rate is writing good content for people and then search engines. My second task is to organize my blog like an average website. All good websites have a natural flow to them a flow that if done right will decrease my bounce rate and increase my click though rate. I’m going to accomplish this by adding hierarchical page lists and hierarchical category lists that will provide better organization for my readers. These features are very common on good websites and I’ve added them to almost all websites I’ve done in the past. It just simply slipped my mind when I started blogging.

Correcting my website design and content tactics

The first question that comes to mind is am I writing for people or search engines?

Well the answer to that is simple and complex at the same time. I have to write good content for people otherwise they will leave (increasing my bounce rate) and I have write good search engine friendly content with keywords that search engines need content for. So the answer is to write content for both people and search engines at the same time always keeping my search engine content subtle enough for people reading what I wrote.

Hierarchical Page List for BlogEngine.net

For right now it will just simple indent the child page list until I find an effective solution here is the code to do this and it was actually already done inside the BlogEngine.net admin I just stripped down the code and put it into a widget.

I need a good T shirt sales website

by Jeff 21. May 2009 15:36

Why is it so hard to find a good website to sell my t shirts on, there are so many companies out there but some of them want to take the idea make it there own and pay me a small design fee, no thanks. Yes there are companies that will sell my t shirt but they change way too much. The basic t shirt shouldn’t cost more than $20 but the print on demand websites want $20 themselves add profit and now the shirt is over priced so much that no one will buy it. Selling on the internet is hard enough never mind having an over priced item. I would like the shirts to be priced under $20 and still make a profit. So far I haven’t found anything good for selling my designs.

On a side note what if there was a way to get designers more involved in the process where they could make a profit on each sale and still have the shirt cost under $20 now that would be something interesting.

To get the cost under $20 we bought a gross of 100 shirts using a couple designs and sizes. I still have some work to do but at least the process has been started. I still think I’m going to use nopCommerce; all its features have hung in with every solution I’ve come across. Some of the plug-ins for WordPress sound good but I think that’s just marketing and that nopCommerce is still a better solution for selling. Although it would be nice to have an integrated blog with the store, my partner is very funny and willing to write his thoughts down and make the world laugh. Every time I’m with him I can’t help but laugh, his stories or comments on things in general have me laughing time and time again but that’s something for another time. The point is he is willing to write and I need to come up with a place for him to post to. More...

Just read a great article on DoshDosh about giving before you get.

by Jeff 19. May 2009 19:21

The DoshDosh article hit home for me on so many levels I recently signed up for what I though was a legit website and they turned out to be complete spammers. If they had read his article and tried to gain my trust before trying to sell to me maybe I would have considered it but they didn’t and they spammed so I blocked! Yes I blocked them and now I will never hear from them again. Spam software is on so may peoples computers these days I can’t believe people would even try what this spammer did they sent me one email an hour full of useless sales junk in each one overlapping with each message. Now if they had read give before you try to get maybe I wouldn’t have blocked them but to be honest there content was designed for a desperate person who didn’t know anything about computers and was target peoples desires for more money (they had a get rich quick scam). The approach that the DoshDosh article takes is that you need to gain trust before you try and sell to your subscribers. Building trust on the internet is a very hard thing to due, there are so many people just doing the same thing but a little bit different. That’s not to say that there isn’t a way to make money online it’s just that the technique of selling is different. Trust needs to be earned before trying to sell I don’t want to go into depth DoshDosh did it perfectly check it out.

How to format code with blogengine.net

by Jeff 19. May 2009 07:54

Formatting code with blogengine.net is easy and is done using
command inside your posts.
starts a section and
ends a section. When starting a code section a language needs to be specified by adding :c# or :js to the code start section.

You will have pretty and well formatted code blocks without changing the html inside your post using the
command.

Example code

A code section will look like this without the minus signs.

[-code:js]

Var test = Document.getElementById(“test”);
Thoughts for a BlogEngine.net extension for writing to the FaceBook wall

by Jeff 17. May 2009 09:42

I’m thinking about creating an extension for BlogEngine.net that will capture when a post is added and update FaceBook’s wall resulting in my friends knowing that I updated my blog.

FaceBook does have an API but I’m not sure if FaceBook allows writing to the wall.

Once I’ve created some of my other extensions I’ll come back and research the FaceBook API. If someone needs the sooner let me know and I’ll look into creating it.

If you know that it’s not possible to write to FaceBook’s wall please let me know by writing a comment.

BlogEngine.net Simple Backup and Download Widget

by Jeff 17. May 2009 03:22

Updated

I just found ttis and will not have to create a backup utilitiy read the full BlogEngine.NET Backup Manager to learn more

I did modify the backup manager to create a website related file name instead of the quid file names it was using. I used the website name and the date to make it destinct.

I'm thinking moving the backup function to a web service, making it a shared function and run it on it's own thread, moving the code wouldn't take long and would make this feature less likely to timeout during backups. Zipping the entire website does take time that would be safer run on a separet thread.

I also excluded the log directory that godaddy adds to websites, I use google analytics so don't need it

I did make a couple changes to the BlogEngine.net Backup Manager Code view the following example code to see my changes

BlogEngine.net Hierarchical Category List Widget thoughts

by Jeff 16. May 2009 11:59

Once I wrote this out I thought it though and realized that while people will find it easier to read search engines will not like the removal of keywords the link’s text. While I like this idea I don’t think I’ll do it even though it would be hard at all.

Notes on a BlogEngine.net grid extension

by Jeff 16. May 2009 09:01

What I would like is to have a simple grid control that will allow visitors to enter data. The data could then be rated by other visitors. Because I have multiple websites where this can be used I would like the control to be as general as possible. What I need is simple way of allow people to enter grid data into blogEngine.net that they can then rate. The visitor can sort, add and rate not edit. Authenticated users should be able to add, edit, insert, delete and rate.

If possible I would like to automatically link fields to posts inside BlogEngine.net.

BlogEngine.net Grid Control Features

I would to be able to add, edit, insert, delete, and rearrange columns. Display column data and row count. The post title may be udated to display the count (21 popular plants)

BlogEngine.net Grid Widget Features

The Grid widget would display the most active grid in the system. Maybe also the most active visitor

Example:

A visitor comes to the website looking for plants and finds a web page filled with the most popular plants. The visitors could then rate and promote one plant or enter another plant for other person to rate.

CommentLuv and KeywordLuv for BlogEngine.net thoughts

by Jeff 14. May 2009 10:43

I call this thoughts because both plug-ins are so easy to create that I don't need to create a road map like i thought. KeywordLuv just parses and separates your keywords from your name and CommentLuv has an web service for getting commenter's last post.

I already have some code written for both but will not be releasing them until there are stable enough to run on my blog.

Staying with BlogEngine.net and am going to write some themes, widgets, and extensions

by Jeff 13. May 2009 09:21

I’ve decided to stay with BlogEngine.net and just write the plug-ins I desire. The one I’m going to start with is CommentLuv. CommentLuv promotes commenting by rewarding the commenter with a link to there latest post. It’s just a nice thing to do for anyone willing to take the time to comment on your post.

CommentLuv for BlogEngine.net road map is still in the making but check back soon for an outline and code.

BlogEngine.net or WordPress research finds a nice widget

by Jeff 8. May 2009 22:09

While researching whether or not leave BlogEngine for WordPress I found a nice little poll widget for BlogEngine that I’m going to install right after I write this.

I was researching what plug-ins are available for BlogEngine and to see if maybe I could just fill in the gaps. I'd love to stay with BlogEngine but writing code day and night for features that could be easy obtained by switching to WordPress just doesn't sound appealing. On the other hand if writing plug-ins are easy then I'll just write them and stay with BlogEngine.

The plug-ins I'm thinking about writing are CommentLuv, and KeywordLuv. Let me know if I missed a good one I just started looking into this and don’t know all the WordPress plug-ins yet.

I also found the SEO Pack for BlogEngine.net.

Any feed back on this would be greatly appreciated.

by Jeff 7. May 2009 08:32

I started looking into WordPress this morning and found some great sites. This post contains some of my findings.

Rather than writing a post about each website i'm going to fill this post with brief decriptions and links to the original sites.

I just read a very interesting article on WritePress check it out - writepress has kept us very busy

Here's another great read - wordpress forum hosting talkpress
